The Brazilian series “Cangaço Novo,” the latest release on Amazon Prime Video, is making waves internationally, dominating the platform’s rankings, particularly in African nations.
Since its launch on August 18, the show has secured a spot in the Top 10 most-watched series on the streaming platform in 49 countries, including Brazil. Of these, 24 are located in Africa, 13 in Latin America, and nine in Asia. In North America, only Canada appears on the list, while Portugal leads the series consumption in Europe. Even Papua New Guinea, representing Oceania, has shown interest.
In countries like Angola, “Cangaço Novo” remained in the ranking for 12 days, securing the number one spot for eight of them. In Mozambique, the series claimed the top position since August 20. Even in nations where Portuguese isn’t the official language, such as Ivory Coast, the production stands out, maintaining its place in the ranking for 13 days, with five of them at the top. Under the direction of Fábio Mendonça and Aly Muritiba, “Cangaço Novo” portrays the violence in the hinterlands of Ceará, following a gang of bank robbers who dominate small towns in the state.
The storyline revolves around Ubaldo (Allan Souza Lima), a discontented bank employee from São Paulo who discovers an inheritance and two sisters in the hinterlands of Ceará: Dilvânia (Thainá Duarte) and Dinorah (Alice Carvalho). Upon returning to his hometown, he becomes noticed due to his striking resemblance to his father, the former gang leader, and is called upon to assume the role of the new mythical “cangaceiro.”
The series is packed with action, female empowerment, and family drama, tackling prevalent social issues in Ceará and other regions of Brazil.
In a post on the old Twitter platform, actress Alice Carvalho celebrated the global success of the series on Wednesday (August 30) and expressed her hope for the show’s renewal for a second season.
