Milly Alcock, the Australian actress renowned for her portrayal of young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’, has been cast as Supergirl in the newly envisioned DC Universe by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Alcock emerged as the chosen actress amidst a competitive field, including ‘CODA’ star Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly, known for her voice role as Supergirl in DC’s animated features like ‘Legion of Superheroes’ and ‘Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One’.
Represented by agencies including CAA, Shanahan Management, Entertainment 360, and Curtis Brown, Alcock’s ascent to a key role in the DC Universe marks a significant milestone in her burgeoning career. While there’s speculation about Supergirl’s appearance in Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman Legacy’, set to start filming in Georgia, her role is not yet fully confirmed. What is certain, however, is that Alcock’s Supergirl will debut in a DC project prior to leading in her own solo feature, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, a project first announced at DC’s studio press day a year ago. The film is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series, illustrated by Bilquis Evely.
At the time of the announcement, Gunn described the series’ approach, highlighting the stark contrasts between Superman and Supergirl’s backgrounds. “In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who grew up on a rock, a fragment of Krypton, witnessing everyone around her die in horrific ways for the first 14 years of her life, before coming to Earth as a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not the Supergirl we’re used to seeing,” Gunn said.
Gunn reiterated this perspective when sharing Deadline’s story today, setting the stage for a unique and possibly more intense portrayal of the iconic character.
