Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired the North American rights to “What You Wish For,” a new suspense-horror film directed and written by Nicholas Tomnay.
The film stars Nick Stahl, renowned for his role in Showtime’s “Let the Right One In”, and premiered globally at the Fantasia Festival. The cast also includes Tamsin Topolski from “Slow Horses” and Randy Vasquez of “America Has Fallen: Election Day”. Magnet is set to release the film this summer.
In “What You Wish For,” Stahl portrays Ryan, a talented chef with grave gambling issues who seeks refuge in an unnamed Latin American country. There, his friend Jack (Brian Groh), a celebrated chef with his own set of problems, welcomes him. The plot takes a dark turn as Ryan assumes Jack’s identity and uncovers the secrets behind his affluent lifestyle.
Eamonn Bowles, the co-CEO of Magnolia Pictures, praised the film, highlighting Nick Stahl’s performance as “tremendous”. Nicholas Tomnay also expressed excitement about partnering with Magnet, describing the film as “a wicked tale”.
Produced by Evergreen Avenue in association with Freestyle Picture Company, “What You Wish For” is produced by Nicholas Tomnay, Francesca Silvestri, and Kevin Chinoy.
The deal was brokered by Magnolia’s co-CEO Dori Begley and SVP of Acquisitions John Von Thaden, along with The Film Collaborative representing the filmmakers.
Magnet is renowned for specializing in genre cinema, including horror, action, comedy, and Asian cinema, with previous titles such as Tomas Alfredson’s “Let the Right One In” and Takeshi Miike’s “13 Assassins.”
