‘The Tourist’: A Netflix Hit, Jamie Dornan’s Series is Pure Fiction

Now available on Netflix, ‘The Tourist’ has been standing out among the most-watched productions by Brazilians, finding itself in the platform’s top 10. The plot follows a Briton, played by Jamie Dornan, who faces a whirlwind of events after being forced off the road by a truck in Australian territory. Waking up days later with no memory, he finds himself in a frantic search for answers while many seem to want him dead.

With a story filled with chases and explosions, ‘The Tourist’ plunges viewers into a deep mystery. However, despite the intensity of the narrative, the series is completely fictional, as clarified by its creators, brothers Harry and Jack Williams. In an effort to innovate and move away from the dark thrillers for which they are known, they conceived the series with a different approach.

In an interview with Radio Times, Harry Williams shared insights into the genesis of ‘The Tourist’. “Jack and I have historically done very dark thrillers… and we wanted something a bit different,” he explained. The series, therefore, arises from the brothers’ desire to explore new territories, blending elements of comedy with traditional suspense.

The idea of addressing memory loss and the search for one’s own identity offered the Williams a unique opportunity to create an “existential thriller.” ‘The Tourist’ is thus a journey of self-discovery marked by an engaging narrative full of twists, but with no basis in real events.
