Selena Gomez and David Henrie are set to bring magic back to the Disney Channel, as they reunite to executive produce and star in a new pilot episode, which will act as a sequel to the original series “Wizards of Waverly Place”. The announcement was made by Disney Branded Television on Thursday, marking a nostalgic reunion for the former co-stars.

Gomez will reprise her role as Alex Russo in a guest appearance, sharing a throwback photo on her Instagram in celebration of the return. Henrie also reprises his role as her brother Justin. The pilot episode cast is rounded out by newcomers Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele, and Mimi Gianopulos.

The sequel’s plot unfolds following a mysterious incident at WizTech, with an adult Justin Russo (Henrie) having left his wizarding powers behind for a normal life with his wife and children. The arrival of a “powerful young wizard in need of training” confronts Justin with the challenge of revisiting his past to safeguard the future of the Wizarding World.

The original “Wizards” series, which aired from 2007 to 2012, followed the Russo siblings, portrayed by Gomez and Henrie, as they navigated their coming-of-age while honing their magical abilities.

Following the original series, Gomez rose to fame as both an actress and a musician. However, she recently expressed a desire to focus more on acting. On a recent episode of the “Smartless” podcast, she mentioned her aspiration to settle on something definitive, emphasizing her initial intent to be an actress, despite her music career taking off.

Gomez is currently starring in the Emmy-winning Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building,” alongside Martin Short and Steven Martin.
